George Lodewijks, together with Marleen van Waele, Piet Kruit, and first chef Jan Lusink, opened the doors of Lucius Fish Restaurant at Spuistraat 247 on July 2, 1975.
Atmosphere
The circle of friends became regulars, and the customer base expanded. Soon there was an atmosphere where jeans sat comfortably next to fur stoles. Salvation Army members who came for ice cream or a cup of soup after their rounds along the cafés of Spuistraat, the editorial staff of Elsevier who held meetings until four in the morning, old and new regular guests and passersby: Johannes van Dam, Lou Reed, Golden Girl Bea Arthur, Roald Dahl. Lucius became the restaurant where everyone would join.
Birthday
The brown wainscoting and floor tiles have since changed to fresh white. The bar and coffee cabinet still stand in the same place, the tiles from then are the tiles of now. Preserving what’s good and keeping up with new tastes and styles.
Lucius celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. A large group of regular guests from Amsterdam and from around the world still enjoy taking a seat. And no, we won’t mention those names. Because when it comes to quality and hospitality, we like to put our guests in the spotlight, but otherwise, we simply want to provide them with a pleasant evening, privately with their friends and family. The welcoming atmosphere, quality, and service that are also ensured by current owner Susanne Paesie and her team are simply part of the interior here. Just like the white tiles.
